Tom Murray opened Aerofuel on April 15, 1982
Alaska Aerofuel, Inc. began operations April of 1982 with the primary purpose of providing Fairbanks International airport with a general and corporate aviation refueling and support operation. In October of 1982 the Company expanded into residential and commercial heating oil sales. The major stockholder is Thomas A. Murray, Chair. Robert J. Hawkins is the President, and Paul Gibson is Vice President. Company history and highlights:
  • The Company branched out to Anchorage with a full service FBO at Merrill Field Airport in June 1986 and to Lake Hood Airport in June of 1987.
  • In the summer of 1988 several large air taxi businesses filed bankruptcy. We sold the Anchorage operation in January 1989, due to the extreme cash flow problem created by the failed air taxis. Our bank abandoned us, so, unaided, we struggled financially over the next six years before recovering.
  • During the Exxon Valdez oil spill we provided emergency operational support for six months for their helicopters and aircraft in Valdez, Alaska.
  • We supervised the Russian fueling and ground support at Fairbanks International Airport when they arrived with their SU-27s and support transports, during their premier air show on U.S. soil in 1993.
  • In 1994, we provided emergency support for the State of Alaska during the arctic flood disaster, and over the past few years for emergency fire support.
  • In February 1994, we began a maintenance contract with United Parcel Service, to maintain their airport and fleet delivery vehicles. In 1995 the Fairbanks UPS branch was the only Alaskan branch to ever pass a complete vehicle inspection. We began maintaining Federal Express's airport and fleet delivery vehicles later that year. We also provide vehicle maintenance for the geophysical department of the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
  • During June of 1996, we installed a 24-hour self-serve Avgas card lock system at Fairbanks International Airport.
  • In August of 1996, we leased an off road aviation fuel truck with driver to Air Logistics of Alaska, Inc.. This was used for support of helicopter operations in remote areas of Oregon during their fire contract.
  • In the fall of 1996 we purchased another 4-wheel drive heating oil truck and two 5,000-gallon transport trucks to meet expanding demands.
  • We also began freight and cargo loading operations for Brooks Fuel, Northern Air Cargo, and Northern Air Fuel in the fall of 1996.
  • We commenced fueling operations in the summer of 1997, for the Bureau of Land

Management. This was a 5-year contract, with option to renew, which was renewed for another 5 years in 2002. We have four new fuel trucks with personnel in Galena, Alaska, and four new fuel trucks with personnel at Fort Wainwright Army Base in Fairbanks to service the BLM fire contract.
  • We are an active member of the NBAA, and have seen steady growth in corporate jet activity in Fairbanks. Fairbanks has more to offer during tech-stops than Anchorage, such as shorter flight distance and taxi times, better prices and service, and no ATC or Customs delays.
  • As a member of the NATA, we became a Safety 1st participant after they bought out ATI which we were active in their safety program. Not only are we a Safety 1st participant, but we are a Safety 1st Supervisor Training Facility. We also certify fuelers in Alaska for air-taxi's and private aircraft owners that want to do self fueling. We want to do our part in keeping aviation a safe profession.
  • In 2001, we became a Facet Filter Distributorship, handling filters, housing and related quality control and testing equipment.
  • Alaska Aerofuel, Inc. is staffed with friendly office personnel, and well-trained fuelers and mechanics, to handle all the demands of our business. If you have any questions, or would like more information please give us a call at (907) 474-0062.
